Activities in the heart of nature are increasingly in demand among today’s travellers, who seek to temporarily escape from the metropolis and its exhausting routines and to recreate themselves in open spaces, rich in fresh air and pleasures that can be savoured at a slower pace.

In this sense, the Costa del Sol is an absolute paradise and a very special setting to discover a great variety of destinations on horseback. Its temperate climate of 300 days of sunshine a year allows you to explore its landscapes at any time. All this while enjoying the Andalusian horse, a native Spanish purebred, famous since Roman times for its bearing, its nobility and its great beauty.

Horse Routes

The rich landscapes of the Costa del Sol are the best fields of exploration for equestrian tourism with its diverse terrains of beaches or mountains, climbing up trails through lush woods or traversing the palm trees that emerge from the Mediterranean shore. Don’t miss the opportunity to trot and even gallop along the

Playa de Estepona, Puerto de la Artesa, the rocky path of the Altabacales and even the fields, valleys and rivers of the Sierra Marbella.

Horse Riding Lessons

Estepona and Marbella offer numerous equestrian centres located at traditional Andalusian farmhouses and beautiful estates where you can learn to ride, perfect your skills and even become familiar with styles such as classical dressage, cowboy dressage or haute école (high school) movements. A perfect plan for adults or children, who will also be able to fulfil their dream of riding a pony. Here are our favourite centres:

Hacienda Montemarina

Located in Los Altos de Marbella in East Marbella, Hacienda Montemarina is a spectacular riding club that offers a 360º experience of the world of horses. Here you can learn to ride as a total beginner or perfect your weak points as a jockey – jumping, dressage…- before participating in a competition.

In addition, its facilities include 50 stalls for the care of the client’s horses or mares with a special boarding programme with expert staff focused solely on the health and well-being of the animal. And that’s not to mention its horse routes on rural trails or its pony club.

Finally, Hacienda Montemarina also has farming areas that provide natural ingredients for its restaurant, with a refined and generous menu.

El Repique Riding Centre

At just 10 minutes from the centre of Marbella, next to the toll motorway, El Repique is one of the undisputed paradises of the horse world on the Costa del Sol.

Within its facilities you will find 45 stalls with automatic watering troughs, one caretaker for every four horses, a circular track, a high-quality outdoor track and a team of highly qualified professionals.

The rural setting of the Marbella mountains is the backdrop for numerous rides and excursions adapted to the level and form of the riders, with stops at the most beautiful spots in the mountains.

And if you have no previous experience, don’t worry: the El Repique staff will give you the necessary guidelines to control your horse and enjoy the ride, and will stay close by to all the riders to respond to any emergency or needs.

Los Caireles

Five minutes from the centre of Marbella, in the Hacienda Cortés residential development, Los Caireles offers unbeatable facilities with two riding tracks, spacious stalls, a walker and an equestrian supply store.

The club has been designed to achieve the most pleasant riding experience both in its territory and the countryside, with activities such as classical dressage, cowboy dressage, jumping and exciting excursions.

Marbella Horses

Marbella Horses is a family-run club with two different centres: the Pony Club Villacana, located in Cancelada, a short distance from Saladillo beach on Estepona’s New Golden Mile, and the El Padrón Dressage Centre by the river that gives it its name.

It arose from the union of its owners, Teresa and Joaquin, whose paths merged personally and professionally in 2005. Both are professional riders and some of the most prestigious dressage trainers in the country.

The Villacana Pony Club has 11 ponies and very successful Andalusian-style facilities and offers activities such as walks on the beach, camps, competitions and even excursions for school students. The El Padrón Dressage Centre specialises in dressage, riding lessons, horse sales and has its own breeding stallions.

Escuela de Arte Ecuestre Costa del Sol

Located in Estepona, between the Sierra Bermeja mountains and the sea, the Escuela de Arte Ecuestre Costa del Sol is one of the most outstanding equestrian centres in Andalusia.

It is not without reason that it stands out for its complete and modern facilities, with an impressive indoor arena with a capacity of 1,250 spectators, a dressage arena, 142 stalls, 36 paddocks, a pony club, art galleries, an event space, catering service and restaurant.

Also among its specialities is the opportunity to participate in exciting guided trail rides, as well as a team of prestigious veterinarians in the area.

Marbella Club Equestrian Centre

With an unbeatable location in the rural and rugged surroundings of Benahavís, next to the Marbella Club Resort golf course and only 20 minutes from its eponymous hotel in Marbella, this equestrian centre is the venue for championships including the Spanish national show jumping competition.

Its luxury facilities span 700 square metres of high-quality fields, with impeccable stables inhabited by Arab, Spanish, German and French horses.

In addition, clients can enjoy long outings through pine forests, suitable for all levels, or take dressage classes and let the youngest ones get up close with the ponies.

La Zagaleta Riding Club

Despite having the appearance and atmosphere of a rural estate in Seville, with its magical entrance flanked by gardens, the Zagaleta Riding Club offers the ideal competition facilities for hosting, preparing, practising technique or training for championships.

This centre has become a very popular destination for horses from all over the world, which are moved here due to the fine conditions of the facilities and the magnificent treatment received.

The rustic horse riding trails lead you through wooded areas and green valleys, natural ponds and even waterfalls, where you can see deer, rabbits, squirrels and all kinds of birds.

Liora: the best gateway to the riding experience on the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol has become a paradise for those seeking the highest quality of life. And that includes, of course, the practice of sports and immersion in nature.

To that end, exciting real estate projects are appearing in the area, such as Liora, created by the legendary Pininfarina – designer of icons such as the Ferrari Testarossa or the amazing Torre Cyrela in São Paulo – Tasvalor Arquitectura and the developer Excem Real Estate.

Located right on the seafront of Estepona and with views of the mountains from its north side, Liora is an avant-garde building of biophilic architecture that seeks to encompass all forms of well-being for the client in its 37 homes and its spectacular common areas.

Its strategic position makes Liora the perfect base to discover the equestrian centres in the area and to experience exciting days on horseback. The team of caretakers will organise the ideal visits for you so that you can get to know the facilities and teachers in the places that interest you most.
